Spain: ‘Stop Messi at all costs’ – Valencia manager’s tactic for Copa del Rey final

Valencia CF manager said his side would have to stop Lionel Messi if they stand any chance of winning the Copa del Rey.

“We will seek to let him interact in the game as little as possible specially in his most influential areas,” Marcelino told journalists at a pre-match press conference in Jerez on Friday.

Fortune favours the brave however, and the Valencia acknowledged his side would have to rely on “luck” to beat domestic champions and cup holders Barcelona.

On the training pitch, Valencia players were filmed mucking around as the session drew to a close.

Valencia, owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, last won the Copa del Rey 11 years ago. The trophy was also their last piece of silverware.
