State of Palestine: Families protest imminent demolition of Khan al-Ahmar village

Dozens attended demonstration against the scheduled demolition of the Khan al-Ahmar village, in the West Bank, on Wednesday.

The protesters marched with Palestinian flags and banners.

Esam Abu Baker, co-ordinator of the Palestinian National and Islamic Forces in Ramallah expressed confidence that the protesters “are staying on the land of our ancestors and we will not leave this place.”

The Israeli Supreme Court temporary injunction to block the demolition of what it calls the unauthorised construction has ended, meaning the threat of the imminent demolition of the village, reportedly hosting around 180 Palestinians.

Earlier in August, 52 residing families in Khan al-Ahmar rejected an offer issued by the Israeli Supreme Court to relocate to a location in Jericho, some 8.5 kilometres (5.3 miles) away from the village.

SOT, Esam Abu Baker, co-ordinator of the Palestinian National and Islamic Forces in Ramallah (Arabic): “The confrontation of any procedures and any steps of the occupation of Khan al-Ahmar can be done by the Palestinian will, which enables them to face these Israeli machines and prevent the demolition. We are staying on the land of our ancestors and we will not leave this place. All of the Palestinian lands are property of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian people will continue in their national struggle till they get their freedom and independence.” *LOOSE TRANSLATION AT SOURCE*

SOT, Laila Gannam, governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh (Arabic): “The Palestinian leadership headed by Mr. President Mahmood Abbas is always in a continuous meeting for Khan al-Ahmar and Jerusalem, which is the most important issue. For Palestine and all its issues, we will stay steadfast till the vanishing of the occupation. All greetings for all the people who are present here, whether they are popular, formal or factions. The compass will stay pointing towards Jerusalem and the Palestinian issue and not only in Khan al-Ahmar. It is the matter of the vanishing of the occupation and settlements and cleansing our lands from this occupation. And, God willing, we will meet each other in Jerusalem as a free capital of Palestine.” *LOOSE TRANSLATION AT SOURCE*
