Sweden: Trio awarded Nobel Prize in chemistry for lithium-ion batteries

Three scientists credited with the development of lithium-ion batteries won the Nobel Prize in chemistry at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Wednesday.

John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino will share the prize money of nine million kronor (£738,000).

After the announcement, Olof Ramstrom a member of the Nobel Committee said, “this battery has had a dramatic impact on our society and it’s very clear that the discoveries of our three laureates really made this possible. It’s really been to the very best benefit of humankind.”

The rechargeable batteries have various uses from mobile phone to electric vehicles.
