Switzerland is voting on a referendum to decide whether to enact restrictions on guns to reflect new European Union laws, as footage filmed in Zurich on Sunday shows.

Poll stations opened their doors at 10:00 local time across Switzerland for citizens to come in and vote on the referendum, with the results expected late Sunday afternoon.

The government of Switzerland has said the proposed gun law changes aim to better protect Switzerland’s population from the misuse of weapons and more effectively controlling the black market. Switzerland’s Federal Council also said that without these changes Switzerland’s membership of the Schengen area could end.

One Swiss voter said he thinks “it is important to stay in the EU and I think weapons are not an important pillar of our society and having a stronger control over the weapons is a good thing, so I voted yes for it.”
