Destroyed buildings, wreckage, burnt-out cars, and scores of corpses are still an everyday reality in the Syrian city of Raqqa, as footage filmed on July 8th shows.
In just a few hours on Sunday morning, response teams and experts dug up over 80 bodies of both soldiers and civilians killed by the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) or in US-led airstrikes.
One year after its US-backed liberation from IS, Raqqa is still far from being restored. Raqqa Reconstruction Committee engineer Ahmad Mohammad Ali described the situation, saying “mines are the main problem, we find them both in the buildings and on the streets.”
“The second problem is lack of equipment, so there should be more. Such a large city like Raqqa needs more equipment,” he added.
Some 3,000 bombs have reportedly been dropped on the former so-called IS stronghold by the US-led coalition since January, paving the way for a ground victory by opposition forces from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the People’s Protection Unit (YPG).
The capturing of Raqqa by US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) served as a significant territorial and symbolic blow to the militant group.
