Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu called on the European Union to be an “honest broker” in disputes between Ankara and the EU member states. He spoke at a joint press conference with EU Foreign Affairs Chief, Josep Borrell in Ankara, Monday.
Cavusoglu commented on possible new sanctions that might be imposed on Ankara by the EU following its drilling for gas in the Cyprus economic zone.
“We would support the European Union being a broker on this issue and other issues as long as it’s an honest broker. You know they say in English, ‘honest broker,’ I use it in that sense. If it approaches the issues as an honest broker rather than in solidarity (with EU) we are prepared to work with the European Union,” said Cavusoglu.
He added that Turkey would “be forced to reciprocate” if the EU resorts to sanctions.
