Supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange held a small rally outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Friday, as the activist appeared by video link from Belmarsh prison at a hearing in relation to forthcoming US extradition proceedings.

“We were shocked at the deterioration of his appearance, and we’re here to support free speech, freedom of the press and Julian Assange”, said a member of Julian Assange Defence Committee.

The WikiLeaks founder, who is charged with computer-hacking and violating a US espionage law, was remanded in prison until his next hearing scheduled for October 21.

Assange completed his sentence for skipping bail on September 22, but remained in jail as a judge believed he could flee before his US extradition hearing.

The activist is currently serving a 50-week sentence for breaching bail in 2012. He is facing an extradition request on espionage charges related to the publication of classified military and diplomatic documents in 2010.
