Former director of Bury FC Joy Hart handcuffed herself to railings outside the club’s Gigg Lane stadium in Greater Manchester on Wednesday, as part of a protest over the dire financial straits the Shakers find themselves in.

“I am absolutely devastated at what is happening at Gigg Lane. We’re a club 135 year old. We’re as old as the founding people in the football league, and one man is going to kill us on Friday. It’s going to be the end of Bury Football Club,” said Hart.

Scores of Bury FC fans gathered outside the stadium to show their support for the club, leaving a coffin with the words, ‘RIP Bury FC 1885-?’ painted on it.

Hart called on Premier League clubs in the area, such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Burnley, to help out and inject much-needed funds into the cash-strapped League One side. The financial plight has left Bury on the precipice of expulsion from the Football League and they may go into liquidation.

Bury’s owner Steve Dale has until Friday to convince the relevant authorities that the club will have secure funding going forward.

The financial situation has led to Bury cancelling its last five league games and a Carabao Cup tie, provoking ire from fans and authorities alike.
