Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, voted in favour of adopting a draft law on the Ukrainian language, in Kiev on Thursday.
The law would reportedly result in the mandatory use of the Ukrainian language by state agencies, as well as by professionals including doctors and teachers.
A total of 278 MPs voted in favour of the bill, while 38 voted against. Outgoing Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is expected to sign the vote into law.
