Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif addressed the United Nations Security Council which met via video to discuss Resolution 2231 on Tuesday.

Resolution 2231 was agreed in 2015 and endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, better known as the Iranian nuclear deal. The resolution sets out an inspection process and schedules the eventual removal of the current United Nations sanctions imposed on Iran, including arms embargo scheduled to end in October, with the US seeking to prolong it.

“Any attempt to change or amend the agreed timetable is thus tantamount to undermining resolution 2231 in its entirety. The Council must not allow a single state to abuse the process,” said Zarif.

Zarif’s comments came in response to earlier comments from US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo who had brought up the idea of extending the sanctions against Iran.
