This week, Donald Trump fulfilled a campaign promise and transferred the US embassy to Jerusalem. The move sparked deadly protests on the border with Gaza – dozens of Palestinians were killed and thousands of others injured in clashes with Israeli forces. A US law allowing the embassy shift to take place has been on the books for decades, as Luke Shrago explains.
Also, the first election in Iraq since the defeat of the Islamic State group was not without surprises. The incumbent, PM Haider al-Abadi, is struggling to keep his job. A coalition government needs to be formed within 90 days. But the vote has already thrown populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr into the spotlight. Erin Ogunkeye has more.
