USA: Beachside town battered by Hurricane Michael

Helicopter footage showed scenes of devastation in the town of Mexico Beach, Florida on Thursday.

Hurricane Michael made landfall close to the small town and according to authorities it bore the full brunt of the storm.

Homes and other buildings were left in pieces, while concrete foundations are all that remain of other structures that were entirely washed away by the hurricane’s storm surge.

Six people are reported to have died since the category four storm hit Florida early on Thursday, but this number is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Hurricane Michael is the strongest storm to make landfall in the continental United States in almost half a century, and the strongest hurricane ever to hit in October.
