The US has started “a visa war” against Russia, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said, speaking in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

“Since the time when Russian diplomats were forced to leave the USA, the American side launched a visa war against us,” the envoy said.

The ambassador accused the US of introducing “a system of exchanges – for each Russian diplomat we will have to give a visa to an American diplomat, as well as for every administrative employee and technical staff we must give a visa to an American.”

Antonov also denied reports that Russia had allegedly refused to issue visas to new teachers at the Anglo-American School in Moscow.

He stated that Moscow is “interested in normal and pragmatic relations with the USA,” pointing out that both sides suffer from the current situation.

“We need to deal with concrete issues and to solve the problems in order to straighten the Russian-American ties,” the ambassador concluded.
