Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean confirmed early on Thursday that 12 people, including one Sheriff’s sergeant, were killed after a gunman opened fire at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California on Wednesday night.
The first responders to the shooting were a highway patrol officer and Sheriff’s sergeant Ron Helus, Dean said during a briefing early Thursday morning. Helus was struck multiple times by gunfire, said Dean. He died of his wounds in hospital Thursday morning.
After additional officers arrived and entered the bar, “the suspect, who we believe was the only suspect, was dead inside and there were multiple other victims of different levels of injury inside that were rescued from the scene and taken to local hospitals,” Dean said.
