US President Donald Trump called Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s response to his offer to buy Greenland “nasty” while speaking to the press in Washington DC on Wednesday, after she called the idea “absurd.” He implied the term was disrespectful to the United States.
“I thought that the prime minister’s statement that it was absurd, that it was an absurd idea was nasty, I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn’t be interested,” he said. “She’s not talking to me. She’s talking to the United States of America. You don’t talk to the United States that way, at least under me.”
The president postponed a visit to Denmark after she said the idea of the US buying Greenland, autonomous territory of Denmark, was “an absurd discussion.”
Trump also called people who voted for Democrats “very disloyal to Israel and to the Jewish people,” saying “the Democrats have gone very far away from Israel,” alluding to Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib’s support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, and other vocal criticisms made.
