USA: Trump ‘not given a thought’ to pardoning Manafort

US President Donald Trump said he hadn’t given a thought to pardoning his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort during a briefing at the White House on Wednesday.

Asked whether he would pardon Manafort, who was sentenced to over seven years in prison for various tax and conspiracy charges, Trump said, “I have not even given it a thought as of this moment. It’s not something that’s right now in my mind. I do feel badly for Paul Manafort, that I can tell you.”

A district attorney in Manhattan has filed state charges against Manafort on Wednesday, which could prevent the president from pardoning his former campaign manager were he to decide to do so, as a presidential pardon can only apply to federal charges.
