US President Donald Trump labelled the ongoing impeachment inquiry against him as a “scam,” during a press conference following the signing of a US-Japan trade agreement, at the White House in Washington DC on Monday.

“They came out with a whistleblower report before they saw the conversation. Had they waited one day, Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t have made a fool out of herself and she would have been able to say what I said. Because when she saw it, she said ‘This is not what the whistleblower said’,” shared Trump.

“You can’t impeach a president for doing a great job,” he added.

Trump is alleged to have asked Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to find damaging information on the business dealings of Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden during a phone call. Hunter Biden was as a board member at a Ukrainian gas company between 2014 and 2019.

There is no public evidence that Hunter Biden was ever under investigation by the Ukrainian government, or of wrongdoing by either Joe Biden or his son.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi announced an official impeachment inquiry into Trump over the allegations on September 24.

On October 3 Trump publicly called on China and Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, although he maintained that he did not pressure Zelenskiy to do so during their earlier phone call.
