Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Democratic hopeful Pete Buttigieg commented on the ongoing protests in Hong Kong while speaking to the press in Des Moines, Iowa, on Tuesday while attending the Iowa State Fair.

“The world needs the US to stand for freedom and democracy right now… and we need a strong voice from the US, calling for restraint on the part of the authorities and speaking to the aspirations of the people of Hong Kong who are seeking freedom, and we should be there for them at a moment when unfortunately America is withdrawing from the world. This is one where we need to be a clear moral voice,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg also commented on US President Donald Trump’s use and threat of tariffs in his trade negotiations with China and other countries, saying “even this Trump White House knows that the American people are paying for these tariffs. A tariff is a tax and that tax is paid by Americans, and that’s how it works. Now, we are already standing to lose more than 800 bucks [US dollars] per household, as a consequence of these tariffs, and we are going to feel this.”

The Iowa state fair is considered a litmus test for candidates ahead of the Iowa state caucuses in February, the first nominating process in the Democratic Party primaries ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.
