At 8.24am local time this Thursday…at this hospital in Reims…Vincent Lambert passed away…9 days after his doctors began to remove his life support.His nephew, who had long campaigned to allow his uncle to die, faced the cameras in Paris to express his relief – adding that rational thought had finally gained the upper hand. SOT NEPHEW”Vincent was in a vegetative state. He wouldn’t have wanted to live like that. Out of respect for him, we had to stop keeping him alive in that state. He has died in the best possible conditions, and now I hope that he can rest in peace”A lawyer for Vincent Lambert’s parents has also issued a statement to say it’s quote “now time for a moment of remembrance” His deeply Catholic mother and father – who fought so hard to keep their son alive – will comment on his death when they feel ready. Just this Monday, they had accepted that his death was ‘unavoidable’A 2008 car crash left Lambert a quadriplegic with severe brain damage…with doctors saying he had no chance of recovery.His condition sparked a deep family feud, and triggered a long legal battle in the highest courts of France and Europe…a battle which ended on May 28th when judges at France’s top appeals court
ruling that doctor’s court LEGALLY end Lambert’s life.As his condition deterioted, vigils were held both in Reims and in Paris. Upon hearing news of Lambert’s death, the Vatican and France’s Catholic Church have expressed their sadness and sorrow.
