The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Lise Grande, paid a visit to the Yemeni port of Hodeidah on Friday, to assess the site’s conditions after the extensive fighting that occurred around the port city between government and Houthi forces.
Grande met with Acting Governor Mohammad Ayyash Qahim and the governorate’s deputies to examine the port’s facilities, especially the cranes, in an effort to accelerate the arrival of humanitarian aid and the opening of humanitarian corridors leading to other governorates.
“The visit of Ms. Liz Grande to Hodeidah province comes within the framework of the Swedish agreement for the status of the port, and especially the readiness of the cranes” Qahim said, adding “we have received praise for what has been achieved so far, and we look forward to applying additional measures in the future to contribute to the peace process in Yemen.”
Following the agreements reached in Sweden at the UN-backed Yemen peace talks in December 2018, the warring parties agreed to a ceasefire and to gradually withdraw all troops from Hodeidah’s port.
