Locals from Villa Fiorita, a small district in Buenos Aires where late footballing legend Diego Maradona lived, spent the day mourning and reminiscing for their hero on Thursday after his passing on Wednesday.

“Diego’s story is very, very inspiring here. It inspires everyone, Diego here is everything to us, he is the best,” stated local Cristian Cejas.

Locals could be seen having an honourary kickabout as well as laying down images and memorabilia in tribute to the Argentine World Cup winner.

“He was the only one who brought happiness and the trophies that Messi still hasn’t been able to do and we have to see if he can do it. For now, the greatest for me is Diego because he brought us that, happiness to Argentina,” exclaimed local resident Omar Aguirre.

The Argentine government has decreed three days of national mourning after the announcement of the death of the legendary footballer.

‘D10s’ as he was often known, became football’s biggest superstar in the 1980’s by leading Argentina to a World Cup victory in 1986 and carrying Napoli to their only ever Italian titles in the 1986-87 and 1989-90 seasons.

Maradona passed away aged 60 on Wednesday. He was hospitalised two weeks ago, to remove a blood clot from his brain, and released eight days later following a successful operation.
