Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei spoke in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in front of the Old Bailey courthouse where Assange’s extradition trial is expected to run until early October, in London on Monday.

“I think that Julian is probably one of the most important figures in the 21st century to defend freedom of speech, free press, and he is really testing our traditional system, our so-called democratic society and, if he is being put in jail, that means the total collapsing of the… our society, our civilised society,” Weiwei stressed.

Assange has been behind bars in Belmarsh Prison since he was dragged out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in April 2019. He faces multiple charges in the US related to espionage.
