Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi didn’t appear at the trial on the charge of plotting to bomb an Iranian opposition rally outside Paris in 2017, and was represented by his lawyer instead. Three other accused attended the hearing, Antwerp, Friday.

Dimitri de Beco, Assadi’s lawyer, stressed: “My client asked me to represent him today. He let me know that he has full respect for these judges as he considers that he should benefit from immunity, today they are not allowed to judge him.”

The verdict is expected to be presented by the court by the end of December, according to civil party lawyer, Rik Vanreusel, with the second hearing set for December 3.

SOT, Dimitri de Beco, Assadi’s lawyer: “My client asked me to represent him today. He let me know that he has the full respect for these judges as he considers that he should benefit from immunity, today they are not allowed to judge him. Also, because his defence rights were not respected since the beginning of the procedure. That is how he feels and that also is what I will say. That’s another reason why he will not be here today. But he has the right to be represented by his lawyer, so that’s what I will do.”
