President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen called on all EU member states to do their part in solving the challenging migrant crisis while speaking before the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday.
“I want to be clear. If we step up, then I expect all member states to step up, too. Migration is a European challenge and the whole of Europe must do its part,” she stressed.
The official confirmed the Commission would present its pact on migration with “a human and humane approach” already next week, while “saving lives at sea is not optional.”
Von der Leyen also stressed that the EU would support Greece in the construction of a new reception centre on the Greek island of Lesbos for thousands of refugees and migrants left homeless in the massive fire at the Moria camp.
