The European Parliament has awarded this year’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the democratic opposition in Belarus, which has faced a fierce crackdown by security forces loyal to longtime President Alexander Lukashenko.
FRANCE 24 correspondent Gulliver Cragg says the Belarus opposition is a movement that surprised the world, especially after the scenes of police brutality in the days after the contested vote. Even so, he says the regime is yet to give an inch on opposition demands including fresh elections.
