Hundreds rallied in Paris, on Saturday, calling for the regularisation of undocumented workers, who, as they say are now on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are the ones who clean the hospitals, the wards, everything, so we want to ask the French state to do as the Spanish and Italians,” said Coulibaly Mamadou, delegate of the Collective of Undocumented Workers of Vitry.
The delegation representing the undocumented workers reportedly called for French President Emmanuel Macron to receive them for talks, adding that the marchs will continue until the demands are met.
SOT, Coulibaly Mamadou, Delegate of the Collective of Undocumented Workers of Vitry (French): “During the lockdown, Italy and Spain regularised the undocumented migrants. In France, in this health crisis, undocumented migrants have been on the front line. We are the ones who clean the hospitals, the wards, everything, so we want to ask the French state to do as the Spanish and Italians.”
SOT, Jean-Jacques, Protester (French) : “I live in Seine Saint-Denis so we have a huge undocumented population, 10,000 to 20,000 people who are undocumented. They often live in dire conditions. Plus the migrants, around 1,300 people at the Porte de Paris alone. All these people are without rights. This weighs on living together because everyone is in very different conditions with enormous differences inside the population. But also it affects work since some of the undocumented workers work and there is exploitation because of their status.”
