Police broke up a demonstration organised to ‘defend neighbourhood culture’ in Berlin’s Neukolln district Saturday, as multiple protests brought thousands onto the city streets.
Footage filmed from a balcony shows protesters marching whilst lighting fireworks and cheering before being dispersed by a large group of police officers.
The protest was organised in part due to the imminent closure of popular alternative pub ‘Syndikat’, which lost its lease in November 2019 after 34 years in operation and failed to successfully appeal the decision.
Police reported 45 officers were injured during scuffles over the weekend, among over 1,100 deployed to manage crowd control at the demonstrations.
