A crowd of coronavirus sceptics gathered at a Saturday rally in Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Wasen organised by the group Querdenken-711, which translates from German into English as “Lateral Thinking 711”.

The gathering, led by Michael Ballweg, was attended by children and adults alike, with some protesters displaying banners and signs with slogans such as “We are loud because our freedom is being stolen” and “Obligation to think instead of a mask obligation”.

A significant proportion of the protesters were seen not wearing a mask at the rally, breaching regulations.

The German state of Baden-Wurttemberg where Stuttgart is based and has status of state capital, has had a total of 58,653 COVID-19 cases to-date, with 8,253 new cases reported between the 3rd and 16th of October.

Querdenken-711 was thought to have been founded in April 2020 and has a record of organising rallies across Germany.
