Thousands of protesters who are sceptical of the need for strict coronavirus measures demonstrated through Berlin’s streets on Saturday.

The protest marched under the slogan ‘End of the Pandemic – Day of Freedom’.

The thousands of protesters from all across the country aim to declare the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its resulting restrictions as ‘over’. Among the organisers were groups such as Stuttgart-based ‘Querdenken 711’ and Berlin-based ‘Kommunikationsstelle Demokratischer Widerstand’.

Demonstrators using little to no protection marched through famous streets such as Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse.

The protests have come amid a recent spike in the number of confirmed cases in Germany. President of the Robert Koch Institute Lothar Wieler had confirmed on Tuesday that the disease control institute was “very concerned” at the latest developments in regards to the increase in cases. He emphasised that citizens must abide by the coronavirus measures “for the upcoming months.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel originally announced the measures in March, in order to curb the spread of the virus. The measures have been gradually relaxed nationwide as the number of confirmed cases has decreased.

There was at least one counter-protest reported that took place simultaneously in the German capital.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, Germany has recorded 210,665 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Thus far, there have been 9,224 virus-related deaths nationwide.
