A top military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader threatened broad retaliation against Washington after the US accused Iran of hitting Saudi oil refineries with drone airstrikes, in Tehran’s Friday prayers.

“If the Americans think of any plots, the Iranian nation will respond from the Mediterranean, to the Red Sea and to the Indian Ocean,” said General Yahya Rahim Safavi who used to act as the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from 1997 to 2007.

“US President Donald Trump will face the same fate as the six presidents before him who failed to impose their political will on the Iranian nation and Iranian administration,” he added.

The drone attacks took place on September 14 at an oil processing facility in Abqaiq and the Khurais oil field, effectively cutting 5.7 million barrels per day or 5 percent of global output. Houthi militants operating in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack. However, US authorities have accused Iran of the attacks.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo shifted his rhetoric in the wake of the attacks saying Washington and its allies were seeking a “peaceful resolution” with Iran in the wake of the attack on Saudi oil facilities.
