Two schoolboys from East London set up a lemonade stand to help raise money for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, as seen on Tuesday. The 6-year-olds hoped to collect £5,000 (€5,400; US$ 6,400) but have raised so far around £76,000 (€82,600; US$ 97,900), a sum that includes a special donation from Hollywood star Angelina Jolie.

“Dear Ayaan and Mikaeel, thank you for what you and your friends are doing to help children in Yemen,” Angelina Jolie’s note sent to the boys begins. “I’m sorry I’m not able to buy a lemonade from you, but I’d still like to make a donation to your stand.”

Best friends Ayaan Moosa and Mikaeel Ishaa set up the stand in July after Ayaan read a book about refugees and asked his mum more about the subject. “It made me really sad,” the boy said.

“The response from the community has been amazing. So many donations have come flooding in, we’ve had friends and family helping us,” Ayaan’s mother said, adding that local bakers have been donating treats to the stand.

The five-year-conflict in Yemen has caused the displacement of millions and killed over 100,000 people, triggering the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the UN.
