Dozens of anti-abortion activists gathered outside the National Supreme Court building in Mexico City on Wednesday, as it ruled against passing a legal amendment which would decriminalize some instances of abortion in the state of Veracruz.
Footage shows protesters standing outside the Court building as they pray and place figures with crosses on the courthouse steps. They then celebrate the decision next to a large image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
“It was very good [the Supreme Court’s ruling], but we are not going to lower our guard because [this] is not the first attempt, there are several. And what we ask the legislators is to solve the problems of the Mexicans, and the solution is not [achieved] by killing them,” said Jaqueline Lopez Flores, an anti-abortion activist.
The bill that would have allowed the decriminalization of abortion in the state of Veracruz received only one vote out of five. Currently, Mexico City and the state of Oaxaca allow abortion to take place up to the 12th week of gestation.
