Thousands of protesters gathered at the Jinnah Stadium in Gujranwala on Friday for a rally organised by leaders of several opposition parties, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government.

The Pakistan Democratic Alliance (PDM) was formed last month by several opposition parties to coordinate nationwide anti-government protests.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif addressed the protesters via videolink from London.

“If you declare me a traitor, say it, if you want to declare me an absconder, say it, if you want to declare me a hijacker, say it if you want to confiscate Nawaz Sharif’s assets and property, do it if you want to file fake cases against Nawaz Sharif, do it but Nawaz Sharif will not stop to raise voice for his poor people who are in miserable condition,” said Sharif, as his daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, was seen sharing the stage at a rally with other opposition leaders.

Sharif, who had been sentenced to ten years in prison in connection with the Panama Papers Case, was granted permission to go abroad for four weeks for medical reasons and has been in London since November 2019.

The Pakistani government has already sent an extradition request to the UK but Sharif’s doctors reportedly said that it would be too dangerous for him to travel amid the coronavirus pandemic.
