Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Lima’s San Martin square on Saturday to protest President Martin Vizcarra’s government and its policies.
Pensioners decried the national welfare system, slamming the insufficient payments while younger citizens denounced excessive water and electricity prices.
Demonstrators said the existing system benefits big corporations while disadvantaging workers.
“The congress has to represent and be the voice of the Peruvian people. That is their duty now, it is what we have to demand from the government,” said one protester in a speech.
Another group called for the government to research the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide as a treatment against the COVID-19 disease, saying it would save lives amid the pandemic.
