A mutual acquaintance of George Floyd and police officer Derek Chauvin commented on his colleague’s death and riots sparked across the country, speaking in an interview for RT from Minneapolis on Sunday.

Octavius Williams said he used to know them both “pretty well,” having worked with Floyd as night club security, and as a retail loss prevention officer alongside Chauvin.

“Floyd was very genuine. I mean that this guy would give you the shirt of his back. He was such a kind spirit and for being such a big guy he was a true gentle giant,” Williams recalled.

According to him, there wasn’t any “previous malice” between Floyd and the officer.

Williams stated that he immediately recognised Chauvin in the video and “was really shocked and horrified”.

“I never knew he was capable of doing something like that. So, I was absolutely shocked and horrified,” he added.

He said he was confused by the violence in the video, stating that “Floyd was not being aggressive, he was already detained.”

Williams added that he was “thankful that everyone [was] paying attention,” but descibed the current situation as a “little bit nuts.”

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the US in reaction to Floyd’s death, with looting and burning also occurring in some areas, including Minneapolis.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis earlier this week after Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, “I can’t breathe” and “Don’t kill me.”

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
