Hundreds of anti-fascists marched in Madrid on Saturday in a protest against right-wing ideology on the day after the 45th anniversary of Francisco Franco Bahamonde’s death.

Elena Martinez, a spokesperson at Coordinadora Antifascista, an anti-fascist coordination group, shared a statement in an interview in which she expressed concern at what she called the normalisation of right-wing ideology in Spain: “It’s been 45 since the dictator died and we’re still facing a moment where being Spanish is extremely exalted, where a new, but not really new, far-right is normalised, where the left-wing political movements face repression, where our fundamental freedoms and rights go back in time.”

Francisco Franco Bahamonde was a Spanish general who staged a coup d’etat in 1936, ruling the country until his death on November 20th, 1975. His rule saw continued repression, imprisonment and extrajudicial executions of political opponents including republicans, socialists, communists and other opposition movements.

SOT, Elena Martinez, Spokesperson at Coordinadora Antifascista: “It’s been 45 years since the dictator died and we’re still facing a moment where being Spanish is extremely exalted, where a new, but not really new, far-right is normalized, where the left wing political movements face repression, where our fundamental freedoms and rights go back in time.”

SOT, Elena Martinez, Spokesperson at Coordinadora Antifascista: “Besides institutional fascism, street fascism is trying to regroup in some of our districts, using the consequences of the new capitalist and socio-sanitary crisis as fuel. Also like we just saw in the San Blas district just a week ago, they resort to attacking and chasing underage migrants who travel alone.”

SOT, Elena Martinez, Spokesperson at Coordinadora Antifascista: “That’s why we go on the offensive, that’s why we must lose fear and take to the streets, districts, to show the muscle of Madrid’s antifascism.”
