The Iranian Chief of Staff for the Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, and the Syrian Minister of Defense, Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, signed a comprehensive bilateral military cooperation agreement in Damascus on Wednesday.
The agreement will see an increase in military and security cooperation between the two countries, with Iran set to bolster Syria’s air defences.
During the ceremony, Iranian Chief of Staff for the Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, said that Iran believes “the territorial integrity of Syria must be completely restored and even a tiny part of Syria cannot go under the control of opposition groups.”
Bagheri also stated that the bilateral agreement “makes this decision more serious and it will entail more pressure on Americans.”
Before the signing of the deal, the Iranian and Syrian parties reportedly discussed the current situation in Syria, including agreeing upon the need for foreign forces to withdraw from Syrian territory.
