At least four people were arrested in Birmingham on Saturday as a small demonstration took place against the UK government’s ongoing coronavirus lockdown measures.

Some 30 demonstrators gathered outside St Martin’s Church after police enforced cordons around the initial planned protest location – Victoria Square in the city centre. Police could be seen actively pursuing some of the demonstrators before taking them away to vans following their arrests.

The event was smaller than first planned and lasted around 90 minutes in total as officers dispersed the gathering.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the UK has had 359,398 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, a number topped only by the week commencing January 3, 2021, where there were 418,669. There have been 7,483 COVID-related deaths this week, the highest number since the pandemic began.
