US President Donald Trump said he hopes to “mediate” the situation between Turkey and the Kurds when questioned on the Turkish military operation in northern Syria in Washington DC on Thursday.

“The last thing I want to do is bring thousands and thousands of soldiers in and defeat everybody again. We’ve already done that. So what we have is really two choices: You have the choice of bringing in the military and defeating everybody again, or you have the choice of financially doing some very strong things to Turkey so that they take it a little bit easy,” Trump said, before adding “we have a very good relationship with the Kurds. Or we can mediate. I hope we can mediate.”

Trump continued by saying that Turkey “knows where I stand” and that he doesn’t think “the American people want to see us go back in with our military, go back into that area again.”

The US President then said “we are going to possibly do something very, very tough with respect to sanctions and other financial things.”

Turkey’s offensive into northern Syria entered its second day, with clashes between advancing Turkish forces and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continuing close to Syrian border towns.
